Taihang Baixing is a Sky-Hanging Ancient Road. Baixing Ancient Road extends from Lingchuan, Shanxi in the north to Huixian, Henan in the south, with a total length of more than 100 kilometers. It has existed since the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, boasting a history of more than 2,500 years. The "Baixing" Ancient Road in Baoquan is the longest and most complete ancient plank road site preserved among the Eight Passes of Taihang, and is known as the "Sky-Hanging Ancient Road". It is not only an important military pass but also an crucial channel for trade and cultural exchange.
Baoquan is a secluded paradise for historical celebrities. Due to the magnificent landscape of Baoquan, many historical celebrities and scholars came here for seclusion and study. During the Wei and Jin Dynasties, the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove often traveled and feasted here, leaving behind relics such as Liu Ling's Sobering Platform and Buqun Platform. Yuan Haowen of the Jin Dynasty once traveled here and left behind poems. Emperor Qianlong bestowed the title of "Abundant Springs and Lively Waters" upon this place. During the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, Yuan Shikai once built the "Yuan's Former Residence" here. Celebrities such as Yelv Chucai, Shao Yong, and Li Zhi also once traveled here.
The crimson cliffs reflect the original aspiration, and the red spirit is passed down from generation to generation. Baoquan showcases the red relics and spirit of the three periods under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. The first is the spirit of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, represented by Chen Geng's Command Post, the Rear Hospital of the Eighth Route Army, and the Xinxiang City Working Committee. The second is the Taihang Foolish Old Man Spirit during the socialist construction period, embodied by the Baoquan Dam, the Hydropower Station, and Western trunk Canal. The third is the spirit of reform and opening up and the striving spirit of the new era, manifested through the Pumped Storage Ecological Project and Pei Chunliang leading the masses out of poverty and achieving rural revitalization.
In Baoquan, there is the Tantou Hydropower Station built in the 1970s. Utilizing the 320-meter drop of the Tantou Waterfall, a diversion-type hydropower station was built, generating 30 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy annually. It is the largest hydropower station in the northern part of Henan Province. Its completion has significantly improved the power supply reliability in the nearby deep mountainous areas and provided great help for the poverty alleviation of the local mountain people, playing a remarkable role in strengthening agriculture and benefiting farmers. Additionally, Baoquan is home to the Baoquan Pumped Storage Power Station, the second largest in Asia. It is a large-scale hydropower infrastructure project invested by the state with more than 4 billion yuan in the 1990s. It plays a role in addressing the peak-valley difference in electricity consumption in the Central China Power Grid, undertaking tasks such as peak load shifting, emergency backup, and frequency modulation for the Henan power system.
Baoquan is the origin and specimen of pre-Qin culture. The water system where Baoquan is located is the "Yu River". According to "Shan Hai Jing", Yu River is clear water and is the origin of the legends of Yaohe, Yaochi, Yaoxi, and Yaomu.
Baoquan is the prime location for Buddhist temples in the Taihang Mountains. Currently, the 800-li Taihang Mountains lack a renowned Buddhist tourism destination. However, historically, it is said that "it is the best among all the Buddhist temples in the Taihang Mountains" (as stated in the "Huixian County Annals" of the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty). The Bailu Mountain Temple Complex centered on the Baiyun Temple can be regarded as a Buddhist sacred place in the Central Plains region.
The Central Plains Waterfall Group forms a Mini Jiuzhaigou in Northern China. The abundance of water resources in Baoquan is extremely rare in the entire Taihang Mountain area and even in northern China, which is the fundamental charm of Baoquan that attracts people from all directions. The perennial average flow is 2 cubic meters per second, flowing continuously throughout the four seasons. With abundant water resources, the waterfalls are magnificent, combining both hardness and softness. It boasts stunning waterfalls such as the Jianlong Waterfall, the Yunv Waterfall, and the Feilong Waterfall. With closely contiguous pools connecting mountain streams, it is the place where Emperor Qianlong bestowed the title of "Abundant Springs and Lively Waters".
The meandering canyon is like a swimming dragon, showcasing a geological wonder. Baoquan Grand Canyon is one of the rare "meandering canyon" geographical landscapes in China. The authoritative domestic geographical magazine "China National Geography" selected Baoquan Grand Canyon as the cover and featured an article titled "Viewing the Meandering Canyons of China in Taihang Mountains", introducing and studying the unique "meandering canyon" geological landscape of Baoquan.
Inside the canyon, various geological layers of the Cenozoic, Mesozoic, Paleozoic, and Proterozoic eras are clearly visible, with clear rock joints and numerous textures, which are as readable as a book and as enjoyable as a painting, presenting a natural geological museum. Baoquan has a long geological history and is an important part of the Guanshan National Geopark. It is one of the typical representatives of the Zhangshiyan landform in the Taihang Mountains. The rock structures of the three geological eras of 2.5 billion years ago, 1.5 billion years ago, and 500 million years ago, as well as the collapse and fracture wonders during the evolution of the Taihang Mountains, are fully displayed here.
Baoquan is a biological world and a paradise of medicinal materials. Within the resort area, more than 1,000 kinds of rare and precious plants, such as Sapindus mukorossi, Taxus chinensis, Pteroceltis tatarinowii, and Ulmus parvifolia, flourish and thrive. There are more than 900 kinds of Chinese medicinal materials, such as Forsythia suspensa, Bupleurum chinense, and wild hawthorn, spread throughout the area. Additionally, 430 species of rare wild animals, including the Taihang Macaque, Goral, Golden Eagle, Merlin, and Black Stork, are active in this region.
Taking culture as the soul, tourism as the carrier, and sports as the engine, Baoquan actively explores a new path for the integrated development of tourism, culture, and sports.
